The amorphous, multilayered membrane that spans the new building, performs several functions. As a soft roof scape it integrates itself into the undulating terrain. It attracts the visitor and offers him the possibility to enter the museum not only from the main entrance of the old building, but also barrier-free via the foyer or the café. The most important link in this context is the extra-large glass elevator, which connects all levels of the old and the new building and lets the visitor experience the spatial characteristics of the design, like wideness and narrowness, height and depth, as well as diverse perspectives. A freely accessible, canopied promenade in a form of a public through-way connects the upper street level „Am Wall“ with the path system of the southern park area. This public passage, together with its transparent appearance, underlines the Kunsthalle’s popular image. The translucent membrane doesn’t represent a new building volume, but mediates – as a hybrid landscape – between the park and the historic building.
