The Lightroom

The design concept for the Imagination Laboratory of Max Ernst Museum is based on the interplay between natural environment and architecture. An essential criteria of the form generation is the spatial ambience.
The building structure was designed from inside out as a “light trap”, like a medium format camera – directed lighting and targeted views create an unmistakable spatial impression.

The building does not search for a dialogue with the museum ensemble, but with the green space of the complex. The sculptural form emphasizes its special function and contrasts existing architecture without however being pushed into the foreground.

The building is situated under the trees row in the southern part of the plot, in close proximity to the administration and parking lot. The main view axes are not disturbed because of the new building and create further accent on paths between the castle park and the museum.
